We’re delighted to have purchased two quality horses at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in Newmarket this week. Johnny McKeever and Claudia Fitzgerald were on the ground to inspect the horses and, with the help of brilliant form expert Rob Waterhouse, we secured two 3YOs with plenty of appeal for Australian racing.
LOT 744 – ANDAB (IRE)
3YO gelding by Saxon Warrior | Purchased for 180,000 gns
Shares available: Yes – 25%
Silks available: No
Our first purchase is a striking son of Saxon Warrior and one of the top-rated 3YOs in the sale. We think he was terrific buying.
A tough gelding who has shown black-type form since his 2YO season. He won the Listed Star Appeal Stakes at Dundalk, ran second in the Group 3 Prix François Boutin at Deauville and finished fourth in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes.
This year he has run second in a Group race and placed in three Listed races.
His best run came last start in a strongly run handicap at Leopardstown, where he was beaten just 1¾ lengths in sixth, earning a Timeform rating of 109 and a timefigure of 109.
He is by Saxon Warrior, sire of Sheza Alibi. His dam, Tickled Pink, won two Group 3 sprints and produced Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Victoria Road. His second dam, Cassandra Go, won the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Potential targets: Epsom Handicap, Doncaster Mile, Toorak Handicap and Five Diamonds.

Rob Waterhouse - Analysis:
Andab is a three-year-old Listed winner, who has been reserved for black-type races and has been consistently there-abouts. In his six starts, after his Listed win, he has run a second (behind Causeway, who subsequently won two including the Group 2 King Edward VII at Royal Ascot) and two thirds (one behind the Talk Of New York, who subsequently won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot), and raced in top races at Royal Ascot (The Jersey) and Goodwood (Thoroughbred Stakes). As a two-year-old, he was fourth in the Coventry at Royal Ascot and second in the Group Three Prix François Boutin at Deauville, before winning the Listed Star Appeal Stakes at Dundalk.
Pleasingly, his time numbers are consistently more than very good. His form is up to 1600m but I have no doubt he’ll be effective over 2400m. He is well bred and was an expensive yearling
His latest performance particularly appeals to me. In a strongly run, valuable Leopardstown handicap, he finished sixth of 17, beaten less than two lengths. That effort earned both a Timeform rating of 109 and a timefigure of 109, substantial evidence of his ability beyond the bare finishing position.
His pedigree is equally compelling. A 290,000-guinea yearling, Andab is by Saxon Warrior, sire of Sheza Alibi, and is a full brother to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Victoria Road. His dam, Tickled Pink, won the Group Three Abernant Stakes and the Group Three Coral Charge. His granddam, Cassandra Go, won the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. This is a family with a formidable record of producing speed and class.
Andab’s proven form extends to 1600 metres, giving us a clear starting point in Australia. I believe we have secured an attractive combination of proven stakes ability, strong time performance and exceptional breeding.
LOT 986 – DEVIL’S PEAK (IRE)
3YO gelding by Camelot | Purchased for 70,000 gns
Shares available: Yes – 35%
Silks available: No
Our second and final purchase is a beautiful grey gelding. Rob valued Devil’s Peak at double what we paid for him, and who doesn’t love a grey!
A lovely grey with a real stayer’s physique who improved through the summer.
He won a Newbury 11f handicap in July, ran second at Goodwood, finished sixth of 17 in the Melrose at York over 14f, and won a Doncaster 12f handicap as the 15/8 favourite in September (Timeform 97, timefigure 94).
He is by Camelot, sire of Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet. His dam was a Listed-placed winner in France, and his third dam’s family includes three-time Canadian International winner Joshua Tree.
Bred by Gaynor Rupert’s Cayton Park, which also bred this year’s Group 1 Epsom Handicap winner God’s Window. Gaynor has retained a share and will continue the journey with us Down Under.
Potential targets: The Metropolitan, Sydney Cup, Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup lead-up races.

Rob Waterhouse - Analysis:
I am very excited about the exciting staying, Devil's Peak, we have secured at Newmarket. He is a three-year-old who has won two great staying handicaps, one at Doncaster, the other at Newbury, both against older horses, a task for three-year-olds over staying distances. Devils Peak was also second in a high-prizemoney handicap at Goodwood, over the Carnival.
I love the fact Devil's Peak continues to improve. Both wins were in very fast times. I particularly love his ‘turn-of-foot’: at Doncaster, he came from seventh at turn, at Newbury, from second last on the corner. His final sectional, in both wins, were very good. The second horse at Doncaster, Alfred Wincham, a four-year-old, whom Devil's Peak beat by 1.5 lengths, came out and won a handicap by eight lengths, franking the form. The second at Newbury, Turty Tree, came out and won a high value race at Ascot. Four winners have come from the Goodwood race.
He has proven himself on firm going, very happily. Devil's Peak has a real ‘stayers' physique, an irresistible grey.
He is by Camelot, the sire of Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet. His dam was a French Listed-placed winner, and his third dam's family include three-time Canadian International winner, Joshua Tree. Brother to 1¼m winner Cathedral Peak.
Devils Peak is named after a part of Table Mountain where, famously, the Devil and a local held a pipe smoking competition. The Devil lost. But a thick “pipe haze” invariably covers the peak.
Two quality horses, limited shares, and some of the best races in Australia on the horizon. Don’t miss your chance to be involved. Please get in touch with Claudia Fitzgerald if you’d like to be part of their Australian journey - claudia@gaiwaterhouse.com.au
Happy racing,
