The first 2YO trials in Sydney in September each year are something our whole industry looks forward to. How can we not be excited about seeing the fresh faces of the next generation performing for the public for the very first time?
Last Monday we had our most successful first 2YO trials of all time in terms of qualifying for the first 2YO Stakes races of the season, with our 13 trial contestants all placing first or second in their heats to gain automatic entry into the Breeders' Plate and the Gimcrack Stakes this Saturday.
Shining A Light
Assessing your 2YO's prospects leading into the trials is difficult for any trainer as the only measure you have at that point is against the other unraced/untried 2YOs in your care. The official trials are your first chance to gauge talent, hence with good results comes a good benchmark for a trainer to gauge the talent of the next wave of 2YOs in their care.
Early Trials Point To A Future Fast One
An example of this is how we are now able to measure the prospects of the Capitalist x Rekindled Choice colt we currently have in full work at Randwick. On Tuesday he galloped impressively in the company of a Justify colt who was matched up to the work partner of Gravitas and Fortian in previous gallops. With those two colts performing well at the trials, we feel we now have a nice line on the Capitalist colt who has been impressing us, particularly over the last four weeks.
