After celebrating the qualities of our Mothers over the weekend, it is fitting that our piece this week focuses on a key source of strength with fillies in Australian racing.
Bren O'Brien in his weekly column 'By The Numbers' in the ANZ Bloodstock News tackled an interesting analysis of our leading Australian sires and their success broken down across colts versus fillies.
Has The Market Reacted?
What is interesting when assessing the two key yearling sales of the year for the two big guns, Magic Millions January & Inglis Easter, is that the market seems to have reacted, even overreacted given the small differences, accordingly.
Yearling Averages:
At Inglis' flagship Easter sale the results lined up Bren's numbers with I AM INVINCIBLE fillies (16 of them) averaging $847,000, versus the colts at $691,000 (17). At Magic Millions the colts (32) and fillies (12) both averaged in the $730,000s.
SNITZEL's colts at Easter however (19 of them) averaged $738,000 versus his 15 fillies at $483,000. At Magic Millions things were more equal, his fillies (15) shading his colts (19) at $520,000 versus $471,000 respectively.
Supply:
What was very interesting in our review of the yearling prices across Easter and Magic Millions was the noticeably less I AM INVINCIBLE yearling fillies offered for sale this year. Of the 77 Vinny yearlings offered at these premium sales, just 28 were fillies (36%).
Could it be that given Vinny's age, the quality of his fillies from some of Australia's best broodmares, that a number of his daughters are being retained to race and breed from?
Broodmare Sires:
The current leading broodmare sires of Australia - 1. Redoute's Choice, 2. Encosta De Lago, 3. Exceed and Excel, 4. Fastnet Rock and 5. Lonhro reflects the fact that our leading sires go on to become our leading broodmare sires in Australia.
I AM INVINCIBLE & SNITZEL will no doubt follow suit in time, especially as their daughters from the better class of mare they covered in the second half of their stud careers start to work their way through.
Interestingly, the pair combined just a few days ago in Scone with the Snitzel filly HIP HIP HURRAH, who is out of the I Am Invincible mare Pure Elation, winning the Listed Woodlands Stakes and remaining unbeaten.
Video Of The Week - A Vinny Filly We Love:
Earlier this year at Magic Millions we purchased a Vinny filly that our team had rated as a Top 5 Vinny filly to target in the sale for under the sale average. These I AM INVINCIBLE fillies, as we have shown above, are going to get harder and harder to get our hands on, especially at this filly's money.
Gai, Adrian, Claudia and Bruce connected over Zoom to talk about her prospects and her education to date, and you can watch their conversation in the video below:This is a precocious and fast looking filly, much like her paternal half-sisters IN SECRET & IMPERATIZ, from a Group winning mare by leading speed sire MUNNINGS.
We are strong on her chances of making a handy racehorse, and her residual value is significant if we can win with her in the races that we think we can. She will be on parade at our Open Day this Sunday at Tulloch Lodge from 11am if you would like to inspect her in-person.
