Since the leak from Monday's Trainers Association meeting at Randwick the reaction by Racing NSW and Peter V'Landys has been like the cat amongst the pigeons. It is quite sad to think that we have had to take such drastic measures to get the powers that be to take note. I was shocked to hear the other day that Racing NSW is taking six metro meetings to the country. Turnover is far greater in the city and trainers here have far greater financial commitment than that of their country counterparts. Like Hawkesbury, once you lose a meeting from the city they never come back. We have to ensure that Saturday race meetings are at Randwick, Rosehill, Warwick Farm or Canterbury. The major population is in Sydney and the race meeting should be there for the bigger punters to bet on the better horses. Bruce is heading to Wyong tomorrow with Andrea Craven, the breeder of Kontiki Park, now that is a tip if ever there was one. It is a long way to come and watch a horse that you bred but Kontiki Park is a lovely type very much moulded in the kiwi style and I believe he will stay all day. This will become apparent this preparation as this is his time, as a rising five-year-old, he is the perfect age to show his true staying qualities. I chose to kick him off in the 1350m event so that by the time he comes to town and steps up in trip he will super fit and bomb proof for punters. Port Augusta, who debuts at Wyong, is a half-sister to Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill). Denise's Star Thoroughbreds and I have a number of very attractive yearlings by this sire. Some say they are small but I do not agree. They look speed horses to me; they are nicely coupled and good strong types. I Won't Dance (Lonhro) could not be said of Stacey Rawiller, Kylie Gavenlock and I at Singo's party the other evening. This mare will take a page from our books in Race 8 and Alex who has been riding her feels she is forward enough to show her best. I have been in the stables with my sleeves rolled up and my socks pulled up. Dr Greg Nash has been sitting in while Dr Leanne Begg has been on holidays. I love bouncing ideas off Greg and Dr Percy Sykes. It was interesting yesterday as we watched Ice Creme trot up, this lovely Encosta De Lago filly. She was ever so slightly off in her action, what we call ? a grade lame. We watched her trot up and back, up and back with farriers Anthony and Kane, Able was missing I like to joke. We studied the filly closely and Percy piped up, "look at her feet, all she needs is a break-away shoe". I have seen this applied to a few of my horses over the years and young Kane found it a revelation. Anthony understood exactly what to make and today he presented me with normal aluminium racing plates with their front ground away so that Ice Creme can break over more comfortably. Straight away she trotted-up much lighter on her feet. This morning we went into bat. I have not been late once since returning from my holiday, it must be all that Taormina sun. Mutameyez (Encosta De Lago) went great. This superbly bred horse can accelerate within a twinkle of an eye and he really hit the line strongly this morning. Mark returned grinning from ear to ear like Cheshire cat. Star's Actrice (Elvstroem) I put in blinkers and Nash thought she would pull but instead she settled perfectly. The filly is starting to come into grand order. New acquisition Really Vexing (Charge Forward) made a delightful pair with Gooree's Fictional Romance (Don Eduardo). Tabassi (Jet Spur) and Tuxedo Royale (Encosta De Lago) was another great pair. Montana Flyer (Flying Spur) Blake declared best and Cannonball has been going so well since I have been giving him short sharp sprints. Alex and Steve have done a great job. Steve O'Halloran, his wife Stef, and their baby Riley had a gorgeous time back home in Ireland. Steve thought it best to have Alex on Theseo for the last time this morning as he felt he may have lost some strength in his holiday period. Alex said one word, "super". Just a Blaze (The Gladiator) continues to put in super gallops so part-owner David Gyngell, head of Channel 9, best get over the pneumonia which has laid him up in bed. Get well soon David, you may have a Cup or two to get to. Pureness (Tale of the Cat) is 100% ready Mark said and Joku (Xaar) put in a glorious gallop. Stratofortress (Stravinsky) went super until the two furlong mark where he saw a shadow and considered jumping it. This is one of the tricks he has learned, unfortunately he thinks he gets brownie points for dropping his rider. Atelier (Redoute's Choice) has come back great and of My Kristie (Redoute's Choice) Nash said, "Where have you been hiding her?" Little did Nash know that I have always had an opinion of her and even purchased her half-brother at Magic Millions, the Encosta De Lago x Platonic colt. Fusakeo (Fusaichi Pegasus) comes back in distance on Saturday so I asked him to work over 1200m and really come home the final 400m. Frank is lunging him daily and Tom the physio has been working on making him more subtle as he tends to get stiff like a board. I want him spot on when he runs in the Woolworths Handicap (2000m) at Rosehill. |
